Job Summary

Owns and leads all web and print design related activities at CNS. Conducts research and engages with companies to ensure CNS exploits the most advanced design methods, tools, and practices while complying with de-facto standards. S/he collaborates closely with the software development team in an Agile environment and facilitate the process of using programming languages to visual design; uses sketching, prototyping, and mockups to convey interfaces and interaction design concepts; develops specification documentation after meeting with existing and potential clients to inform discussions of design and user experience of product development; assesses product functionality and usability through overseeing the design of user studies; develops and optimizes the CNS visualization style guide to ensure professional design quality and incorporates findings of usability studies; coordinates the production and delivery of print and multimedia materials; develops and implements marketing plans to support the initiatives of both CNS and the Places & Spaces: Mapping Science exhibit; efficiently manages project demands to meet multiple deadlines; organizes and archives major design products for future use; supervises one or more Graphic Design Assistant(s) and effectively delegates responsibilities, writes weekly task lists, and supports the assistant(s) in the completion of the tasks; trains CNS faculty, staff, students; completes various other tasks as needed. This person must be able to work independently but coordinate all efforts effectively with the CNS team, clients, and funding agencies.

Required Qualifications

REQUIRED: Bachelors degree in Graphic Design, Visual Communications, or related field required and two years professional experience in both print and web design.

Leadership and team-management skills. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Expert working knowledge of the Adobe Creative Suite. Proven developer experience with web presentation technologies: HTML, CSS, JavaScript. Ability to create seamless link between creative design and data driven information display. Familiarity with both Mac and Windows environments. Ability to understand complex and technical information of a scientific nature, extract essential information, and design for understandability and usability. Familiarity with information visualization techniques. Proven experience collaborating with a software development team. Able to perform detailed work, communicate verbally and in writing. Creativity in identifying complex problems and finding solutions quickly and accurately

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with photography, photo editing, videography, and video editing; Working experience with template languages such as Django.

Working Conditions / Physical Demands

This position is physically comfortable; individual is normally seated, standing, or walking at own discretion. Occasional travel. Must be able to work at a computer for an extended period of time.
