Job Summary

The Lighting/Staging Manager is responsible for the general management of the IU Radio & TV Services (RTVS) television studio 6 facility, lighting equipment inventory, scenic shop, and storage areas. Oversees set/scenic construction and storage, props department, lighting design, and lighting execution. Supervises and trains student production crew. Coordinates maintenance and building repair services.

Constructs and implements television sets for studio productions, including construction, setup, operation, strike, storage, and design drawings utilization. Collaborates with producers and the Associate Director, Education & Production Services Department, in the planning of productions, specifically establishes and creates set design and/or lighting design, including drafts of ground plans, set construction plans, lighting design plans, and necessary related drawings.

Designs and executes television lighting for both studio and on-location productions, including setup and operation of electrics, grip equipment, lighting instruments, lighting consoles, design drawings creation and utilization.

Manages studio and scene shop facilities including coordination of all studio space, scene shop, and lighting equipment complement, ordering and inventory of supplies (lamps, gel, construction materials, etc.).

Coordinates and/or performs facility-related tasks, including coordination of repair and maintenance services with physical plant, departmental use and inventory of the warehouse-storage services.

Recruits, supervises, and trains hourly production crew in the execution of lighting design and/or set construction.

Provides corrective and preventive maintenance for lighting instruments, accessories, tool complement and studio rigging system.

Provides detailed line item cost estimates for lighting and/or set construction projects.

Reconciles with producers and business office for cost-accounting requirements.

Employs and supervises proper safety procedures around all equipment, including the departmental representative for OSHA safety compliance.

Required Qualifications

REQUIRED: Bachelor’s degree and two years studio and/or field lighting director and set construction experience.

Possess a valid driver’s license with the ability to be insured by Indiana University.

Preferred Qualifications

Five years studio and/or field lighting director and set construction experience; Experience with CAD and other related software programs; Theatrical rigging training/certification; Ability to communicate set and design concepts; Excellent leadership, problem-solving, organizational and motivational skills.

Working Conditions / Physical Demands

Employee must be able to: push/wheel and lift heavy equipment cases, some weighing well over 150 pounds; sit for long periods of time, while operating lighting equipment during productions; run cable, as well as work in tight space conditions within equipment racks and cable runs (on floors); climb and work from ladders and lifts to heights exceeding twelve feet.

Salary Range $37,800 - $45,000
