Job Summary

Develops, implements, and evaluates a comprehensive nutrition program designed for optimal student athlete performance, including assessment, education, and programming regarding the nutritional needs of varsity student athletes. Provides consultative services to student athletes individually or as a team, including the provision of nutritional information, meal planning, and dietary guidance. Works with sports medicine and psychology staff members to address disordered eating or other problems related to eating and/or weight; develops practical sports nutrition recommendations grounded in the latest data and industry research for performance enhancement and measure; and reports outcomes of sports performance nutrition programming. Consults with administrative, coaching, and training staff regarding the development and evaluation of all nutrition-related programs, including training table and programming in the athletics department. Additionally, provides education and guidance concerning general NCAA regulations regarding the health and safety of student athletes.

Note: Position requires incumbent to comply fully with all NCAA, Big Ten (or other conference) and Indiana University rules, regulations, policies and procedures.

Required Qualifications

REQUIRED: Bachelor’s degree in nutrition, exercise physiology, or related field and three years of experience working as a dietitian.

Must be a Registered Dietitian (RD) certified by the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) with active status and have or be eligible for Indiana licensure.

Must be a Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics (CSSD) or eligibility and willingness to become certified as a CSSD.

Must demonstrate a solid commitment to academic integrity, the welfare of student athletes, and full compliance with NCAA, Big Ten, and university regulations; and must be able to comply with Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPPA). Demonstrated ability to accurately measure height, and body weight; assess body composition (body mass, body fat, and muscle mass); and assess and evaluate energy balance. Comprehensive knowledge and application of medical nutrition therapy, including interviewing and education techniques. Knowledge of the following: complementary medicine, ergogenic aids, and nutritional supplements, including herbal supplements; eating disorder/disordered eating signs and symptoms; measurements of resting metabolic rate, energy expenditure, VO2max, and lactate threshold; food service quality and safety procedures; and rules and regulations of athletic governing bodies (e.g., National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA), World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), regarding banned drugs and restricted substances). Proven computer skills including competence with nutrient analysis, word processing, and presentation software. Outstanding time management, organizational, and record-keeping skills including ability to self-motivate and work independently. Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication, presentation, and counseling skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree in exercise physiology or related field; specialized knowledge and experience in performance nutrition strongly; experience working as a dietitian with a college-age population and with athletes.
