Job Summary

Works independently to provide highly specialized technical expertise in the architecture, design and evaluation of major new GlobalNOC networking solutions for the GlobalNOC organization. Serves as a principal/senior network engineer for the Global Research NOC responsible for architecting, evaluating, organizing, presenting, and implementing networking systems in an environment comprised of a wide variety of technologies and vendors, deployed on a nation-wide footprint. Has responsibilities to prepare extensive project analysis and create proposals and design documentation for the development of systems. Responsible for the overall function of parts of the GlobalNOC networking environment, including responsibility for technical review of network components created by other network engineers.

This position is posted at a PA4IT level but may be filled at a PA3IT level depending on the candidate’s qualifications. Although they will be similar, the duties and responsibilities may differ if filled at the lower rank. Please see the Requirements Section below for the qualifications listed for each level.

Required Qualifications

PA4IT Requirements:

REQUIRED: Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related discipline and five years of experience in the administration and engineering of complex network environments and various architectures, including work in Layers 1 through 3.

Combinations of related education and experience may be considered.

Experience with the following: large scale high level architecture design for complex systems; network systems development and implementation; operating and oversight of production networking environment; a variety of network equipment technologies ranging from layers 1 through 3; a wide range of vendor’s network equipment, including but not limited to Cisco, Juniper, Ciena, HP, etc.; a wide variety of operating systems, including Cisco IOS and IOS-XR, Juniper JunOS, etc.; and wide area computer network technology. Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills including ability to interact and communicate effectively with a wide variety of individuals. Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a leadership role and give technical presentations to large audiences; and proven ability to work as part of a team.

PA3IT Requirements:

REQUIRED: Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related discipline and three years of experience in the areas of design, integration, installation, configuration and maintenance of data networks.

Combinations of related education and experience may be considered.

Possess a broad knowledge of networking protocols, specifically relating to routing of packets (OSPF, IS-IS, BGP, PIM, MSDP, and MPLS); and working knowledge of other Internet services and applications within the IP suite (TELNET, FTP, NNTP, DNS, SMTP, HTTP, etc.). Excellent written and verbal communication skills including ability to interact and communicate effectively with a wide variety of individuals. Strong organizational skills including ability to handle multiple priorities and constantly changing demands and work effectively in a multitasking environment.

Preferred Qualifications

PA4IT: Master’s degree; supervisory experience.

PA3IT: Experience with Cisco and/or Juniper routers and switches; experience with optical technologies especially WDM and DWDM, programming in Perl or C, and basic UNIX system administration; experience with the installation and maintenance of networking or other computer hardware; experience with large scale projects and rollouts; interpersonal skills, technical writing and communications, and understanding of the network standards and protocols.
