Job Summary

Manages a team of statewide field journalists in the production of hard-hitting, high-quality news content for radio and TV broadcast and online distribution. The Managing Editor is a professional journalist with excellent management skills who ensures adherence to standard journalistic guidelines and practices. This complex work involves leading a team of specialized beat reporters and developing heightened editorial collaboration among 12 Indiana Public Broadcasting’s partner stations for the coverage of Indiana issues. The Managing Editor is a trusted copy editor who understands broadcast and AP style and promotes a culture of accountability.

Required Qualifications

REQUIRED: Bachelor’s degree in journalism or a related field, three years of experience in public broadcasting or a journalism-related endeavor, two years of editing experience, and two years of management experience.

Possess a valid driver’s license with the ability to be insured by Indiana University.

Knowledge and understanding of journalism ethics; and ability and judgment to produce a large quantity of work to deadline that matches the quality of NPR and PBS productions. In-depth understanding of journalistic principles, particularly as they apply to public media; and proven ability to analyze information from different fields as well as manage a team of journalists from various locations. Experience working with multi-platform technologies and the ability to adapt material to a variety of platforms; and hands-on experience in writing, reporting, editing, production, and on-air delivery for radio, TV, and online. Knowledge of video equipment, lighting and editing software; and knowledge and experience with audio and video equipment. Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills including ability to interact and communicate effectively with a wide variety of individuals.

Working Conditions / Physical Demands

Must be able to lift and carry about 30 pounds of audio/video equipment.

This position requires the ability to travel, view, hear, and speak. Travel needs to be accomplished to deadline requirements.

Salary Range $52,500 to $58,950, depending on relevant experience
